Dave volunteered for the task. As a strong runner, it was as though he had trained for this moment. He figured he could make it in and out as fast as anyone on the team, and it was, after all, gas readings they were after.

During a period of relative quiet from the mountain, he dashed down into the 150-foot-deep, 350-foot-wide crater (45 meters deep, 106 meters wide). Results from this formidable excursion also showed that gas levels remained low—much lower than expected if an eruption was on the horizon.

News reporters wrote about Dave scrambling into the summit crater; back in Oak Lawn, his parents read about it. When they next talked by phone, Dave tried to downplay the feat: “Aw, that wasn't so much,” he said. “You know how these newspaper guys are.”
